Why you usually need SRT
SRT is the format almost everything accepts: Premiere, Final Cut, DaVinci Resolve, YouTube uploads, Vimeo, and most social schedulers. WebVTT is a web-playback format, so anything that came off a website tends to be VTT while anything going into an editor wants SRT.
What gets dropped
VTT can carry positioning and styling that SRT has no way to express — cue settings like align:start or position:10%, plus STYLE and REGION blocks. Those are discarded, because SRT has nowhere to put them. Timings, text and line breaks all survive intact.
Handles messy files
Real VTT files are often untidy: NOTE comments, cue identifiers, timestamps that omit the hours field, Windows line endings, a stray byte-order mark. All of that is handled rather than rejected.
Questions
Will the timings stay exactly the same?
Yes. Both formats store time to the millisecond; only the decimal separator differs — VTT uses a period, SRT a comma. Nothing is rounded.
My VTT has no hours in the timestamps. Will that work?
Yes. VTT allows the hours field to be dropped for short videos, so 01:30.500 means one minute thirty. That is read correctly and written back out in full HH:MM:SS,mmm form.
Can I use this on captions downloaded from YouTube?
Yes, that is a common case. YouTube serves captions as VTT, and editors want SRT.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion is JavaScript running on your device. Nothing is transmitted, stored or logged.
